Understanding the Types of Qi: A Comprehensive Guide to Energy Cultivation

At our academy of Baguazhang and Qigong in Bali, we teach a holistic approach that encompasses energy development and the cultivation of the three distinct "types of Qi" one can feel in the body.

What is Qi and Qigong?

Qi, symbolized by a rice kernel popping with gas, represents an alchemical process, and Gong is the refined skill. Hence, Qigong translates to the refined skill of working with energy.

Fundamental Concepts and Types of Qi

Qi is a vital force and essential concept in Chinese philosophy and medicine. Understanding the different types of Qi is key to inner vitality and connection to the natural world.

Congenital Qi (Yuan Qi)

This original energy is inherited from parents, shaping your physical and mental characteristics. It's stored in the kidneys and influences growth, development, and reproduction.

Acquired Qi (Hou Tian Qi)

This type of Qi includes:
  • Gu Qi: Derived from food and drink, essential for other vital energies.
  • Kong Qi: Extracted from the air we breathe, nourishing vital organs.
  • Zong Qi (Gathering Qi): A combination of Gu Qi and Kong Qi, vital for heart and lungs.
  • Zhen Qi (True Qi): A complex form responsible for well-being.

The Three Types of Qi Felt in the Body

  1. Skin Qi: This Qi moves through meridians, channels, and is felt as warmth, tingling, or fullness. Cultivated through exercises like 8 Trigram Qigong and Standing Tree Qigong.
  2. Nerve Qi: Associated with the nervous system, felt as an electrical tingling. Developed through joint movements and exercises like Meridian Qigong, 5 Element Qigong set, and Fire Qigong.
  3. Bone Qi: This Qi runs through the bones and requires balance of skin and nerve Qi. Developed through rotational movements and exercises like Bone Qigong Set and Circle Walking practices.

Practices for Cultivating Types of Qi

We offer various practices, whether static or moving, sitting or standing, to cultivate these types of Qi. From simple breathing exercises to more advanced physical body movements and circle walking, our curriculum is designed for all levels.

The Journey of Cultivation

In the journey of self-understanding and unearthing Qi within our being, our academy offers a comprehensive approach to cultivating "skin qi," "nerve qi," and "bone qi." These practices extend beyond mere physical exercise and resonate within the very fabric of existence.
